UoW Session 3 — Unused Passages / Seeds

From session 2 (chars ~200k-400k):

1. The battle that needs no enemy

"It struck him then that the whole process didn't really require any enemy forces at all. The battle was him and the army under his command, against the elements. A third party was superfluous."

— Zakalwe in the flooded cottage chapter. Existentialist compression. His relationship to conflict is self-enclosed — the enemy is a formality, not the actual adversary.

2. Elethiomel on autumn leaves

"A tree that kept its leaves wouldn't have to grow new ones; it would grow bigger than all the rest; it would be the king of the trees."

— Delivered as a boy's idle observation. Villain-logic in miniature: maximizing advantage by refusing the costs everyone else pays. The leaf-drop is regeneration; refusing it is accumulation without renewal. This is the clearest statement of Elethiomel's character we get in the backward arc — and it arrives as a child's daydream.

3. The caldera proof of centrality Zakalwe, dying on the rock, proves via nested concentric geography (pool → island → caldera → continent → planet → galaxy → universe → all reality) that the rock he's talking to is the mathematical center of all reality. Banks at his most playful. Also actually moving: a dying man constructing an absurd proof of significance that loops back into something real. Every dying person is, in that geometry, the center.

Notes: Session 2 covered the Staberinde campaign, the Governance party, the Shias Engin flashback, the flooded cottage, and the caldera dying sequence (the chair revelation in its oblique, backward-arc version). Session 3 should start at chars 400k — next: Beychae meeting, mission resolution, deeper backward arc revelations.
